On Saturday afternoon, July 2, Alamo rode up in front of Julia’s house with a package in one hand. He found her sitting on the front porch.

She smiled. “I assume those are my dresses.”

He dismounted. “Yes’m. And they’re really pretty.” He stepped up on the porch, handed her the package, and sat down beside her.

Julia quickly opened the package and took out the four maternity dresses. “Oh yes! They’re beautiful! Lisa did a wonderful job on them! Thank you so much for riding into town to get them for me.”

“My pleasure.” He smiled warmly at her.

Julia looked around at the open ranch land. “Oh, Alamo, it’s such a lovely day. I just needed to be outdoors and breathe in this fresh country air.”

“It is a beautiful day,” Alamo responded, secretly reveling in the beauty of the young lady next to him.

Julia rose to her feet. “Can you stay for a while?”

Alamo nodded. “I have a little time right now.”

“Good! I just made some lemonade and cookies. I’ll be right back!”

The tall rancher grinned. “Lemonade and cookies sound good.”

Julia entered the house, and Alamo sighed as he relaxed into the wicker chair.

Moments later, Julia returned, carrying a tray with two full glasses and a plate of oatmeal cookies. “I know you like oatmeal cookies.” She handed him a glass of lemonade and set the plate of cookies on the small table beside him.

As Julia sat down, Alamo picked up a cookie and took a bite. “Mmm-mmm! These are good!” He then took a sip of the lemonade and smiled at her. “Good lemonade too! So refreshing on such a hot day!”

While they nibbled on cookies and sipped lemonade, Alamo talked joyfully about the baby’s birth. Julia was pleased that he was so excited about his new little nephew or niece. She was still unaware that he had been praying that one day he could marry her and that when the child was old enough to talk this young one would call him papa instead of uncle.

“I’m really happy your parents will be coming as the time for your delivery draws closer,” Alamo said. “I know it will be a blessing to you to have them here when the baby is born.”

Julia smiled. “Indeed it will. You know, Alamo, when they were here before, they fell in love with this part of Texas. And I’ve told you how their letters have been full of praise for this ranch and its surroundings.”

Alamo nodded.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if at some point in time, they decide to move here.”

“Oh, that would be great! Then we could be sure of keeping you here.” Alamo had been a bit concerned that Julie might want to move back to the plantation once her baby was born.

Julia met his gaze. “Alamo, I have no intentions of ever leaving this ranch. This is home to me, and I want to raise my child here, close to his or her father’s family.”

Alamo smiled. “I’m glad to hear that, Julie. I can’t even imagine this place without you.
